Brian d’Souza is an award-winning sound artist, DJ, music producer and live performer. His compositions fuse field recording from around the globe with electro-acoustic production techniques to create ‘acoustic ecologies’ that are centred on exploring the psychological and physical benefits of sound.

Brian recently launched A State Of Flo - a blog and record label - which gives him a platform to release and write about sound art under his own name and music via the alias Auntie Flo. A State Of Flo is an exploration into the biological and ecological basis for music. It achieves this by releasing music which incorporates sounds from the natural world with cutting edge technology and new formats. A State Of Flo supports the environmental charity Earth Percent. Its first release, Mycorrhizal Fungi, incorporated the sounds of various fungi and was featured on the BBC, New Scientist, Glastonbury Festival, Tate Modern and more.

In 2020, he launched a 24-hour radio station Ambient Flo centred on musical well-being to ease the stresses caused by the global pandemic. It received praise from the likes of The Guardian, Rolling Stone and Resident Advisor for its novel ‘Artist Profit Share’ model, with Loud & Quiet proclaiming it represented ‘a new kind of radio station’. It previously broadcast as a monthly radio show on Worldwide FM.

During a ten year plus career DJ-ing and producing under the alias Auntie Flo, Brian cemented his position as a central figure in a ‘new strand of club music fusing electronic and world influences’ (The Wire).

Through his revered his Highlife label, radio show and club night he continues to ‘take World Music into the future’ (The Guardian).

He is the 2019 winner of the SAY Award for Scottish Album of The Year for ‘Radio Highlife’ (Brownswood 2018) and in 2020 was awarded as Scottish Electronic Musician of the Year sponsored by the Sub Club and Nordoff Robbins. The sold out Radio Highlife tour culminated in a headline set at Gilles Peterson’s inaugural We Out Here Festival with his Auntie Flo live band

His influential Highlife party celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2020, and is widely recognised as introducing a more diverse musical palette to UK dancefloors and beyond, influenced by Brian’s own Kenyan and Goan roots. Inverted Audio stated ‘one of the most culturally exciting developments to happen to club culture in the UK… a prosperously based groundwork of music which will pave the way to come for artists in future years.’

Following a ‘Momentum Artist’ award by the PRS in 2015, his 2nd full length album ‘Theory of Flo’ was commended as one of the ‘Albums of the Year’ in various publications, including DJ Mag who awarded it ‘9/10’.

As a DJ and live performer, he has toured extensively around the globe, performing in Asia, Australia/New Zealand, US/Canada, Africa, Latin America and frequently in Europe and the UK. Festival appearances have included Glastonbury, T in the Park, MoMA PS1, Dimensions, Latitude and many more. DJ appearances include Panorama Bar, Good Room, Trouw, Fabric, D-Edge and residencies at Glasgow’s Sub Club and London’s Plastic People. He has also performed two live sessions for BBC Radio 1, five Boiler Room broadcasts and released a variety of DJ mixes for the likes of Resident Advisor, Dekmantel, BBC 6 Music and Beats in Space.

He has released music on labels such as Brownswood, Disco Halal, Kompakt, Philomena/Innervisions, Permanent Vacation, Sofrito, Huntleys and Palmers and Highlife. He has remixed musical legends such as Oumou Sangare and Baba Maal, and a variety of contemporary bands and artists including Sarathy Korwar, Crystal Fighters and Chvrches.

In 2007, he founded playlist curation and music strategy company Open Ear following ‘Creative Pioneer’ award by NESTA. It worked with thousands of global brands including Nike, Google, Dr. Martens, Selfridges, UEFA, Tate Modern etc before being acquired in 2023.

Brian currently runs Swell Studio, a company focussed on digital sound therapy within the health and well-being space. Clients include Asics, Jagermeister, IHG Hotels, Ennismore, Koko, The Dorchester Collection and many more.
